A sense of smell and toddlers

Did you know that smells experienced in early childhood can bring on a flood of emotional memories later in life? No other sense has the same power to trigger feelings, mood and recollection in quite the same way.

As toddlers grow, their sense of smell becomes an important tool for exploring the world around them. From recognising familiar people and comforting scents, to discovering new environments through food, flowers and nature — smell plays a key role in learning, development and emotional wellbeing.

How toddlers use their sense of smell

Toddlers are still developing their ability to identify and interpret different odours. This is one reason they may not notice (or mind!) smells the way adults do. It’s also why they can struggle to tell the difference between safe and unsafe products, such as household cleaning items.

Even so, smell helps toddlers make sense of daily life. Familiar scents can bring comfort and reassurance, while new smells support curiosity, communication and discovery.

Why smell is closely linked to emotion and memory

Smells are processed in areas of the brain linked to emotion and memory. This is why certain scents — like freshly cut grass, baking bread or the smell of rain — can instantly bring back strong memories from childhood.

These early experiences can leave a lasting impression, helping toddlers form positive associations with routines, people and places.

Everyday ways to explore smell with toddlers

There are lots of simple opportunities to introduce toddlers to new smells in a safe and enjoyable way. Try:

  • Smelling flowers and plants on a walk
  • Exploring herbs and fruit at the supermarket
  • Noticing the smell of rain, soil and fallen leaves outdoors
  • Talking about food aromas while cooking together

Smells don’t need to be strong to have an effect. Offering a variety of gentle scents in moderation can help toddlers build awareness and curiosity over time.

Finally…

Smell is a powerful sense that supports learning, wellbeing and emotional connection. By encouraging toddlers to explore the world through scent, we can help them build strong memories and a deeper understanding of their environment.
